What is the Sony Open projected cut? All you need to know

The 2024 Sony Open has commenced at the Wai'alae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii, with 144 players currently vying for a spot in the upcoming third round on Saturday, January 13.

For this tournament, the projected cut will be determined after the completion of the second round, which is expected to conclude today (January 12). Considering the previous cutlines for the past three seasons of the Sony Open, it is expected that only the top 60 players and ties will secure a spot for the weekend rounds.

The previous three seasons (2023, 2022, and 2021) of this event included a cut at the 36th hole, with only the top 65 players and the ties advancing to the following two rounds.

Meanwhile, the 2024 Sony Open, which faced suspension on the opening day due to darkness, includes Cameron Davis, Chris Kirk, Keegan Bradley, and Justin Rose all competing for the prize purse of $8,300,000.

At the end of the first round, Davis secured an impressive 8-under-62 to claim the top position on the leaderboard.

Ludvig Aberg, Kurt Kitayama, and Zac Blair are among the other players looking to make it to the weekend rounds. They are yet to commence their first round following the event's suspension on the first day.

A sneak peek into the Sony Open tournament format

The Sony Open, the second event on the PGA Tour, is a four-day tournament. The 72-hole competition will have a different format after two rounds.

During the first two days of the tournament, the golfers will compete in threesome pairings. All these players are expected to participate simultaneously and will tee off in either the morning or afternoon sessions, depending on their pairings.

However, due to the suspension on the opening day, a batch of players will play their first round on Friday, January 12th.

Nevertheless, the subsequent weekend two rounds will adopt a distinct format. Pairings and tee times will be determined according to each player's total score after their previous rounds.

This means the player with the highest score will go first, followed by other golfers based on their respective scores. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, January 14.

If there's a tie among players, a playoff round will be required to determine the ultimate victor. In the end, the winner of the Sony Open will earn a whopping prize money of $1.494 million.
