Xander Schauffele registered his name in history by winning the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Three years later, he is back in contention for the gold once again.

Schauffele aggregated at 18-under-266 to win gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, beating Rory Sabbatini of Slovakia by a one-stroke margin. The bronze medal was decided after a seven-man playoff among Paul Casey, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Sebastián Muñoz, Mito Pereira, and C.T. Pan.

In the first extra hole, Matsuyama and Casey were eliminated by par. All the golfers tied on the second playoff hole before Rory McIlroy, Sebastián Muñoz, and Mito Pereira exited on the third. On the fourth playoff hole, Morikawa missed the par save on the par-4 18th, which resulted in Pan winning the bronze.
