Tommy Fleetwood carded an eagle, eight birdies and zero bogeys in the first round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. His score of 10-under 62 equaled the course record set by Sami Valimaki in the 2023 edition of the same event.

Fleetwood had a chance to better the record as he was 9 under with four holes to play. However, he could only manage consecutive pars on 15, 16 and 17, and only matched Valimaki's record with a birdie on 18.

Tommy Fleetwood is seeking his third win at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship (2017, 2018). He had this to say to the DP World Tour News Service after his first-round performance:

"It was a lovely round of golf to play. Putted amazing, felt like I read the greens so well, beautiful pace control and hit a lot of perfect putts and started holing them."

Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy carded six birdies and one bogey to tie for 18th, five shots off the lead.
