Rory McIlroy carded six birdies and a bogey in the first round of the DP World Tour Championship to share the lead with Tyrrell Hatton. Hatton finished with seven birdies and two bogeys minutes earlier.
Hatton said after the first round (via ASAP Sports):
"To be honest I feel like the score was better than it felt. I felt I was tinkering over most tee shots and at times, I felt like my misses were bigger than perhaps they have been over the last month or so, month and a half."
"But at the end of the day, to shoot 5-under, you have to, I guess, play fairly solid golf. And in my head, I don't really know what that is. But here we are."
Last week's winner of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Paul Waring, is in third place after the first round of the DP World Tour Championship. Waring carded five birdies and one bogey.
In the group of players who have not yet secured their PGA Tour card for next season, Rikuya Hoshino is the best-placed player. The Japanese player is tied for 4th place at 3-under after carding 5 birdies and two bogeys.
