Here's how things stood following the conclusion of an epic final round on Sunday at the PGA Championship in Valhalla:

  • 2: Bryson DeChambeau, -20
  • 3: Viktor Hovland, -18
  • T4: Thomas Detry, -15
  • T4: Collin Morikawa, -15

By the midway point of the final round, the PGA Championship had ultimately morphed into a three-man race. Justin Rose, Collin Morikawa, Thomas Detry, and Shane Lowry were involved, but they weren't the three biggest contenders.

That was Viktor Hovland, Bryson DeChambeau, and Xander Schauffele. Those three went back and forth across the final round in what amounted to an epic finale, with prevailing. Going into the 18th hole, DeChambeau birdied to tie Schauffele. Schauffele then birdied the final hole in clutch fashion to win.

Scottie Scheffler could not continue his epic run and give himself another chance to win the Grand Slam in 2024. The arrest which landed him in jail on Friday morning might have played a role, though he carded a 66 in round two after. It was round three when he struggled, shooting 73 and giving himself an eight-stroke deficit that he couldn't make up.

Both Shane Lowry and Xander Schauffele put in record-tying rounds. In the first round, Schauffele shot nine under to tie the record. Then, Lowry did the same in round three and came within a close putt of breaking that.

Rory McIlroy did not break his decade-long Major drought, but he did play well. He was not ever among the top leaders, but was consistent throughout for another strong outing after his two PGA Tour wins in a row.

Tiger Woods, after making the cut at The Masters Tournament in April, did not make the cut this weekend. The legendary golfer shot 72 in round one for a decent showing, but flamed out with a 77 in the second round and went home.

There were several other surprising cuts, including Jon Rahm (even), Ludvig Aberg (even), Akshay Bhatia (+1), David Puig (+3), Phil Mickelson (+4), Wyndham Clark (+4), and Michael Block (+7). John Daly, Ben Griffin, and W.H. Lee withdrew from the PGA Championship.
