Rickie Fowler crashes out of WGC-Dell Technologies Matchplay despite winning the last match
It was a heartbreak for Rickie Fowler on Friday as despite doing all he could. He fell just short of qualifying for the top 16 of the WGC-Dell Technologies Matchplay. This has dented his chances of playing at the 2023 Masters.
To play at the first major of the year at Augusta National, Fowler needed to stay in the top 50 of OWGR and required a top 16 finish in the Austin event. While he won his match against Keith Mitchell by 1-up, Billy Horschell's win over Jon Rahm meant the former would qualify for the knockout round at the WGC-Dell Technologies Matchplay.
Billy Horschell beat Rahm by 5 and 4. He secured two wins and a tie to top the group 2. Fowler won two but lost against Horschell. The World No. 2 had a disappointing tournament with a couple of losses and just one win over Keith Mitchell. Mithcell finished last with one tie and no wins.
The hopes are still not over yet for the 2015 Players Championship winner as he will need to win the Valero Texas Open to secure his place in the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
