Why does Silver medalist Tommy Fleetwood earn less than Bronze winner at the 2024 Olympics? Reason explore

Scottie Scheffler clinched gold at the 2024 Olympics, while Tommy Fleetwood and Hideki Matsuyama bagged silver and bronze, respectively. However, among the three, only Fleetwood didn't earn a penny for his triumph.

On Sunday, August 4, Tommy Fleetwood fired 5-under-66 in the final round of the 2024 Olympic golf men's event to win the silver medal for Great Britain. He fell one stroke short of Scottie Scheffler, who rallied from behind after shooting a course record of 62 to win the gold medal.

While Scottie Scheffler earned $37,500 for his gold medal for the USA, Matsuyama will receive $6000 for his bronze medal. However, unlike the other two podium finishers, Tommy Fleetwood didn't earn any official money, as Great Britain doesn't give any incentives to medalists.

According to Forbes, Great Britain is one of only four countries, alongside New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden, that does not give any direct monetary bonuses to their medalists. However, there is no record of the indirect incentives.

As per Forbes, Hong Kong gives the highest monetary incentive to its winners. It offers approximately $768,000 to the gold medalist, $384,000 to the silver medalist, and $192,000 for winning the bronze at the Olympics. Singapore is not far behind giving $745,000, $373,000, and $186,000 to gold silver, and bronze winners respectively.
