WM Phoenix Open introduce fresh changes for 2025 after a chaotic 2024 edition
Following the chaotic 2024 edition, the WM Phoenix Open is all set to introduce new changes. The changes were announced by the organizers in a press release on Monday, October 21.
The 2024 WM Phoenix Open concluded with Nick Taylor beating Charley Hoffman in a playoff finish. While the event was thrilling, the scenes outside also drew significant attention. Fans went wild at the tournament, and a record number of arrests were made. The disorder was widely criticized by both traditional fans as well as professional players.
Both Scottsdale officials and the Thunderbirds released a joint statement on Monday, announcing changes for next year's WM Phoenix Open. The changes include complete digitization of the tickets and the introduction of new and improved pathways.
"Each and every year, The Thunderbirds review the previous tournament and look for ways to improve," Tournament chairman Matt Mooney said as per AZ Family.
"We’ve been working closely with the PGA Tour, Scottsdale Police and Fire, title sponsor WM and our other valued partners to make impactful changes for 2025. We are excited to announce these enhancements as the countdown to 'The People’s Open' begins," he added.
As for the new entrance, Mooney said it would improve the flow of fans during entry and exit.
"It will also provide a shorter walk for fans near the high-demand areas around holes 16, 17, and 18," he added.
Besides eliminating physical tickets, Good Any Day passes will also be available.
The rain caused a lot of issues as the grass became muddy, and fans gathered at the walkway on the 18th green, which became a chokepoint. To avoid this, TPC Scottsdale is set to widen the walkways.
"For example, the path from the 17th fairway to the 11th hole tee area has been doubled in width, offering more space for fans to move comfortably. Food and alcohol vendors will also be strategically relocated to balance foot traffic," the press release read as per Golfweek.
The 2025 WM Phoenix Open will be the event's 90th edition and will take place from February 6 to 9.
2024 WM Phoenix Open recap
Nick Taylor entered the final round of the WM Phoenix Open with a 54-hole lead, but Charley Hoffman was catching up on Sunday. However, Taylor’s late surge with three birdies in the final four holes helped him shoot 65 on Day 4 at TPC Scottsdale.
Eventually, Taylor tied with Hoffman at 21-under after regulation holes, forcing a playoff. While both birdied the first playoff hole, the Canadian golfer claimed the title with a birdie on the second extra hole. Hoffman missed his birdie putt and settled for a runner-up finish.
