World Golf Hall of Famer Davis Love III undergoes successful open-heart surgery
Former Major winner Davis Love III had undergone open-heart surgery. During the final round coverage of the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open on Saturday, January 25, CBS reporter Jim Nantz revealed the news about the health of the World Golf Hall of Famer.
Davis Love III learned about his heart problem around ten years ago. During his regular visits to his doctor, his cardiologist told him about a leaky valve. The doctor kept a keen eye on his health, and last year informed him about the need for a valve replacement. He finally underwent surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.
The surgery was a success, and Davis Love III has been recovering from it. Per Golfweek, he was released from the hospital on Saturday, January 25, morning.
Davis Love III has enjoyed a fabulous career on the PGA Tour, where he won 21 tournaments. He now mostly plays on the PGA Tour Champions. Last year, however, he only competed in three tournaments on the Champions Tour and withdrew from one.
Love III finished ninth at the Chubb Classic 2024 and T63 at the Constellation Furyk & Friends tournaments, where he played three rounds of 70, 73 and 77.
Davis Love III releases a statement about his health
Davis Love III released a statement sharing the details about his surgery with fans. The American golfer confirmed that he was at home and recovering. He thanked the doctors at the Mayo Clinic for their support, saying (via PGA Tour):
“The procedure was successful and I’m now at home recovering. I went in healthy and came out healthier. I’m extremely grateful for all the well wishes, prayers, and messages I have received.
"I have been blessed with great care at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. Dr. John R. Cangemi, Dr. David J. Cangemi, Dr. Peter M. Pollak guided me to this surgery with Dr. John Haney. I’m grateful for them and their teams’ expertise and care," he added.
Love III is also optimistic about returning to play "by this summer." He added:
"I am motivated to prove them right and get back to playing golf by this summer!”
He last competed in the RSM Classic, held in November 2024. However, he only played one round of 82 and withdrew from the competition.
Davis Love III started playing professionally in 1985 and had over won around 37 professional events in his career. He has won 21 on the PGA Tour and also won a Major at the PGA Championship in 1997.
Following his successful career, in 2017, Love III was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. In addition to that, he also won the Payne Stewart Award in 2008 and the Bob Jones Award in 2013.
