World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler’s $13 training aid helps get his basics right
Scottie Scheffler is currently in phenomenal form, and one thing closely associated with him is consistency. He achieved this by mastering the basics with the help of a $13 training club.
Scheffler owns a specific practice club that resembles a six- or seven-iron, featuring a molded rubber training grip to ensure he holds it the same way every time.
His routine is simple, as he prefers not to complicate things during practice. Earlier this year, Scheffler discussed his routine of practicing with the molded grip club.
"Really just checking my fundamentals," he said at the Masters. "I feel like when my swing gets off, it's usually something that's very basic about what I'm doing. And so I have my grip club because I'm checking my grip. I have the alignment sticks down because I want my alignment to be good."
He added that it also helped him with his ball position, with his caddie, Ted Scott, or coach, Randy Smith, usually ensuring his swing was correct.
"I'm just working on my form and hitting shots," he continued. "It's pretty much my normal practice routine. That's exactly how I practice at home. So when you come to a tournament, it's just more of the same."
Scheffler also revealed that he usually tries not to spend more than an hour per day on this practice.
The 28-year-old golfer had a remarkable season, clinching seven titles on the PGA Tour and adding an Olympic gold to his trophy cabinet. His scoring average of 68.01, was the lowest for any player in a single season. However, his adjusted scoring average was 68.645, slightly higher than Tiger Woods' record of 67.79, which he achieved twice.
