Wyndham Clark plays $100-per make competition with Rory McIlroy on putting green at BMW Championship
Wyndham Clark played a putting game on the green with Rory McIlroy during the 2024 BMW Championship. Clark and McIlroy teed off at the ongoing FedEx Cup Playoffs event, which began with its first round on Thursday, August 22.
Following the opening round, Clark was asked in a press conference whose idea was the ball-rolling contest he was seen playing with McIlroy. The former US Open winner said that he and his caddie often do this on the greens. Clark said (via ASAP Sports):
"Well, my caddie John and I always do it, and then Rory behind us threw it, and then we said, all right, let's all do it, and then we did one down and back."
Clarke had earlier revealed that the game didn't involve a winner, only "makes." A reporter later asked him who came closest:
"No winners but who came closest?" a reporter asked.
Clark replied:
"It's no closest. It's only makes. $100 makes."
The 2024 BMW Championship is the second playoff event of the FedEx Cup. Following this event, only the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings will qualify for the upcoming Tour Championship next week.
In the first round of the 2024 BMW Championship, Clark shot a 72 to finish in a tie for 22nd place, while McIlroy carded a 2-under-par 70 to settle in T10. Keegan Bradley took the lead, followed by Hideki Matsuyama.
Wyndham Clark collaborates with Paige Spiranac to share preparation tips ahead of BMW Championship 2024
Wyndham Clark recently collaborated with social media golf personality Paige Spiranac for a YouTube video ahead of his outing at the BMW Championship. Spiranac uploaded the video on her channel, where she has around 429 thousand subscribers.
In the clip, Spiranac can be seen asking Clark for some tips as she was preparing for the Creator Classic event.
Speaking about how he manages pressure on the golf course, Clark said:
"The biggest thing is I always go back to process and everyone hears this term and it probably gets overused but I feel like the best really focus on the process and focus on like actual doing of it rather than outcome and for you and you're coming up I would focus on okay what when I play my best what do I do and what's that process and so you know for me lately I have gotten a little too much into outcome focus and recently we've switched it to back to the process and I've started playing good golf" [2:14].
Clark had a decent start at the 2024 BMW Championship. He shot an even-par 72 in the opening round, finishing the round in a tie for 22nd place. At the recently concluded FedEx St. Jude Championship, he tied for seventh place.
After a solid performance last week, Clark is playing in the PGA Tour event that decides entrants for the Tour Championship. He will tee off for the second round of the BMW Championship in a group with Rory McIlroy at 11:00 a.m. ET on Friday, August 23. The tournament will have its final round on Sunday, August 25.
