Wyndham Clark releases $68 hoodie for breast cancer awareness
Wyndham Clark is a well-known campaigner against breast cancer, a disease that claimed the life of his mother. Clark has launched a number of initiatives to support the fight against the disease, the latest being a collaboration with clothing brand Municipal.
The 2023 US Open champion and Municipal have launched a pink hoodie with proceeds going to cancer programmes. Clark unveiled the initiative by posting a photo of himself wearing the hoodie on Instagram, accompanied by the following text:
"Could not be more excited to announce that we partnered up with @MUNICIPAL to create a special edition Pink Collection for Breast Cancer Awareness Month."
"20% of all Proceeds will be going directly to the @playbigfoundation where they will be used to assist individuals and families that have been affected by Breast Cancer."
The hoodie is now available on Municipal's online store for $68. Breast Cancer Awareness Month runs throughout October and serves as a framework to raise awareness of the dangers of the disease and to raise funds to fight it.
The Play Big Foundation was established by Wyndham Clark in early 2024 to support women and families affected by breast cancer.
The foundation's name comes from a phrase that Lise Clark said to her son Wyndham Clark. The phrase currently presides over the organization's website:
"Play big. Play for something bigger than yourself."
A brief history of Wyndham Clark's mother
Wyndham Clark's mother, Lise Clark, came from a military family. In her youth, she was involved in modelling and even won the Miss New Mexico contest in 1981. She married Robert Clark in 1989 and together they had three children.
In 1997, just weeks before the birth of her third child, Lise Clark was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent the necessary treatment as quickly as possible, including chemotherapy.
Lise battled the disease for more than 10 years until she was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer in 2012. She died in August 2013 at the age of 55.
At the time, Wyndham was 19 and a student at Oklahoma State University. The loss of his mother could have cost him his golf career as it led to inappropriate behaviour on the course. Fortunately, his coach at the time, Mike McGraw, stepped in to save the talented player's future in golf.
Ten years later, Clark won the 2023 US Open, an occasion on which he paid tribute to his mother, who introduced him to golf as a child. On receiving his championship trophy, Clark said (via The Sun):
"When she was sick and I was in college, she told me, 'hey, play big. Play for something bigger than yourself. You have a platform to either witness or help or be a role model for so many people.'"
Clark also pays tribute to his mother at every tournament he plays by wearing pink on the Sundays he competes. Pink is the color associated with the fight against breast cancer.
