"Xander played unbelievable" - Billy Horschel recollects Open Championship loss, eyes Wyndham Championship win

After his narrow loss at the Open Championship earlier this year, Billy Horschel is eyeing a win at the 2024 Wyndham Championship. The tournament is currently underway at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. After being affected by Tropical Storm Debby, the event was postponed by a day, with round 1 beginning on Friday, August 9.

Round 2 was suspended late Saturday evening with 20 golfers left to complete their round. The tournament will resume early Sunday morning and likely see a Monday finish. Amid all the chaos, Horschel has managed to keep his cool and stay on track to try and win the Wyndham Championship.

After the second round, the 37-year-old American sits two shots behind the leader Matt Kuchar with a score of -10. Speaking to the PGA Tour, Billy Horschel reminisced about his performance at the Open, saying:

“I didn't lose the golf tournament. I played a really good round of golf. If obviously, I make a few more putts there earlier on the back side, it's a different story. But Xander played unbelievable. You've got to tip your cap to him.”

Horschel finished two strokes behind Xander Schauffele, who took his second Major victory of the year at the Open. Now, Horschel finds himself in a similar position and hopes to overcome a big hurdle to win the event.

Billy Horschel determined to improve his FedEx Cup ranking position with a win at Wyndham Championship

Billy Horschel bounced back from his loss at the Open Championship and is confident of his golf skills. He carded rounds of 62-68 over the first two rounds of the ongoing Wyndham Championship. In the same interview, Horschel said:

“You want to get back on the horse as soon as you can. You want to give yourself chances in contention again. My record here has been really good over the last, I would say six, seven years and I knew this course has been fairly kind to me."

The Wyndham Championship is the last regular tournament of the 2024 PGA Tour season. Several golfers are playing in the tournament to gain enough FedEx Cup points in order to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs.

"Obviously this year was going to be really difficult due to the fact of not being in Signature Events. I felt I've had a really good year. Right now, I'm just trying to position myself in a better position for East Lake, try and get inside that top 10, get inside the top five," he added.

Horschel is currently ranked 27th in the FedEx Cup rankings but can go closer to the top 10 if he were to win the Wyndham Championship.
