"You have to find the balance"- Scottie Scheffler describes his ideal FedEx Cup Playoff format after finding the current one 'silly'
The 2024 PGA Tour season has come to an end, and as the post-season playoffs are underway, Scottie Scheffler sits atop the FedEx Cup rankings. With six wins on the Tour this year in addition to an Olympic medal, Scheffler holds over a thousand points' lead going into the BMW Championship.
However, recently Scottie Scheffler went on to call the FedEx Cup format 'silly', saying that it was not a season-long race. Ahead of the BMW Championship, Scheffler spoke about his ideal format for the FedEx Cup playoffs. Speaking via ASAP Sports, he said:
"I think there's a balance between identifying the best player over the course of the season and having a good TV product because there would be some years where if you kept the points the same for the entire year and had a true season-long race just based on the FedExCup points, this would be a year where it would not be too exciting of a finish unless Xander was able to win the last three playoff events or something like that."
Scheffler also went on to add that since the playoff was just over the last three weeks, a golfer, who played well for the whole year but not for those three weeks, might suffer.
"It's the FedExCup Playoffs. The winner of the FedExCup played the best for these three weeks in the Playoffs. Some years that would be the best player for the whole year and some years it won't."
Regardless, Scheffler said that he is looking forward to the challenge of playing the FedEx Cup, and is relatively relaxed due to his high rankings after 'doing 95%' of the job in the first half of the year.
Scottie Scheffler opens up about adjusting to the altitude of the BMW Championship location
The BMW Championship is being held at the Castle Pines Golf Club, south of Denver. The course is at an altitude of 6,200 feet, which is expected to be a bit of a challenge for the golfers. Scottie Scheffler spoke about how the experience of having played some previous tournaments at a high altitude has helped him going into this weekend:
"I played a tournament on the Korn Ferry TOUR here in Colorado and then we also played in Bogota, which is some pretty extreme elevation there in Colombia, and I remember sleeping really bad the first few nights. I felt like that experience playing at a little bit higher altitude has kind of helped me adjust to this week."
Going into the weekend, Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to win the tournament with odds of +330. Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa are other favorites to win the event. Viktor Hovland is the defending champion of the tournament.
