“You stripped off to your pants” - How drinking with John Daly turned wild for a golf insider
John Daly has a reputation, and Andrew Johnston, also known as "Beef", and John E. Morgan know it well. Johnston was a guest on the Life on Tour podcast from the DP World Tour. He joined Morgan and George Harper and set the record straight on some things, and all three of the podcast hosts swapped some of the craziest Daly tales.
Known for his unorthodox behavior on and off the golf course, Daly could often be seen with a drink or cigarette during his golf rounds. He has shared numerous stories since his most active playing days, and many of them involve alcohol.
Morgan shared a story that did include drinking, and things ultimately went off the rails (beginning at 49:03):
"I know mine was like JD at the 84 Lumber Classic, said, 'John come on mate' and straight upon the stage Hootie and the Blowfish shot a black sambuca. There I am singing, knocking on Evan's door on the tambourine with him in front of all the players and everyone and I... he's like taking his top off, got his man b**bs out, I'm doing the same."
He went on to describe it as "mental" and Harper shared his own tale:
"I was having a beer and he was..we'll get a bucket of these beers like this and he was obviously straight on... He's like come meet me and stuff and carry on and I remember sitting there and getting there and had music playing as always and he ordered two large whiskies... They came... He went, 'Can we order two more?'... Next thing, I'm in my pants and I'm shaking a tree and then I'm jumping in the pool."
Daly woke up during this and Harper continued detailing the story:
"Miss just at the top was like yeah you stripped off to your pants and you were shaking this bush for some reason, like going to jump in the pool."
Daly reportedly had no issues with the alcohol and didn't do anything crazy like Harper did.
John Daly loses home during hurricane
John Daly, when he's not playing a PGA Tour Champions or other golf tournament or partying somewhere, lives in Florida. His home was recently wrecked by Hurricane Helene. A few weeks ago, the storm obliterated the southeastern United States.
Daly said via the PGA Tour:
“I’m just glad everyone is healthy, that’s the main thing. You live in Florida, you have to understand that’s going to happen, but not like this. I didn’t think it would be this bad.”
He shared that some family members in the area also lost their homes. John Daly said that when that happens, the "memories is what you miss" in the aftermath. He also shared his hope that everyone can get their homes back.
