NFL legend Tom Brady receives 'golf course' invite from Arizona Cardinals' defensive end after announcing retirement
Tom Brady retired from the NFL officially. He announced the move with a social media video one year after retiring for the first time.
What may go unnoticed as a result of Brady's shocking announcement is the fact that the NFL is also losing one of its best defensive players ever- JJ Watt.
The defensive end had already confirmed that Week 18 would be the final appearance of his illustrious career and upon Brady's announcement welcomed the newly retired legend to the club.
Watt tweeted:
"Greatest of All Time. No question, no debate. It’s been an honor and a privilege. PS - The newly retired group meets on the golf course every morning at 10am. Drinks are on the new guy, so bring your wallet."
The seven-time Super Bowl winner Brady has been on top of the NFL for the longest time, but will now find himself on the bottom of the totem pole with his retired companions and on the golf course.
Nevertheless, Brady appears poised to take up more golf just like Watt. It's not uncommon for recently retired athletes, such as Michael Phelps or Gareth Bale, to take up golf.
Brady has also already played golf in a major capacity, participating in a recent iteration of Capital One's The Match with Aaron Rodgers. The duo took on and beat Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen.
Brady, now that he has more free time, will probably spend a lot of time on the green. Will it be with JJ Watt? The retired defensive end will surely hope so.
Why did Tom Brady retire?
Tom Brady announced his retirement on social media with a heartfelt video. He said:
"‘Good morning guys. I’ll get to the point right away. I’m retiring. For good. I know the process was a pretty big deal last time so when I woke up this morning I figured I’d just press record and let you guys know first. I won’t be long-winded. You only get one super-emotional retirement essay and I used mine up last year."
He continued:
"Thank you guys so much to every single one of you for supporting me. My family, my friends, my teammates, my competitors, I could go on forever- there's too many. Thank you guys for allowing me to live my absolute dream. I wouldn't change a thing."
The biggest reason that Tom Brady is probably retiring, though he didn't specify this in the video, is that he's just getting old. He'll be 46 when the next season begins and that's incredibly old to still be playing quarterback.
Additionally, he's coming off his worst season of all time in both team records and many statistical categories. It was clear every week, despite the fact that he somehow made the postseason, he was not the same player.
Before it gets bad enough that he has no choice but to walk away, he's choosing to do so on his own terms. Perhaps Tom Brady should have stayed retired last year, but it's better late than never.
