History of Pinehurst Resort
Pinehurst began in 1895 when James Walker Tufts, a Boston philanthropist, acquired 5,800 acres of devastated forest property in the central North Carolina Sandhills. Initially a thriving pine forest, this land, which Tufts paid roughly $1 per acre, had been cleared for lumber and its abundant supply of turpentine and building materials utilised. A desolate, sandy wasteland was all that remained. What more is there? A pasture. However, the stunning course and resort were born out of that pasture.
History tells that the game was first played on the dairy cattle grazing areas by some hotel guests who hit small white balls, upsetting the herd. Following that, Tufts engaged New Yorker Dr. D. Leroy Culver to plan and develop a golf course at Pinehurst. A crude nine-hole course was built in February 1898. A few months later came the first clubhouse. To add nine more, Pinehurst employed John Dunn Tucker, its first golf professional, in 1899. Later, the course became our first 18-hole layout, Pinehurst No. 1. A young Scottish golf professional named Donald J. Ross was employed by Tufts in 1900 to oversee Pinehurst's golf operations. Ross stayed on staff at Pinehurst until his passing in 1948. Ross established himself as one of the nation's top golf professionals and course designers during those fifty years. Over four hundred North American golf courses are his original designs or revisions.
The North and South Championship series had begun by 1903, the Pinehurst Golf Club had been founded, and Pinehurst was rising to prominence in American golf. When he arrived, he started working on Pinehurst No. 1, redesigning it. Pinehurst No. 2, a championship course with sand greens and a naturally rolling terrain, was his first 18-hole design here. Later, he created Nos. 3 and 4, as well as an elementary training programme for staff members and caddies, all of which he updated regularly when the season was off.
