Tiger Woods could leap 1200 places in world rankings at the Genesis Invitational
US golfer Tiger Woods surprised everyone when he announced that he would be taking part in the upcoming Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, California.
The news was especially shocking because Woods had previously stated that his main focus for the 2023 season would be the major tournaments considering his health condition post the horrific 2021 car crash.
But getting a chance to see Tiger Woods back in action once again...who is complaining? The Genesis Invitational will be held from February 16 to 19 2023. It is one the elevated events for the 2023 PGA Tour season.
While his chances to win the tournament are currently dicey, if there is one thing golf fans have learnt over the years, it is to never doubt Tiger Woods. Along with the prize money, the golfer definitely has much to gain from winning the competition.
It is being said that Woods, who is currently scraping the barrel at world no. 1294 spot, may just be jetpacked up the OWGR list if he wins the Genesis Invitational. Jetpacked is the current term here because he might jump up to the 54th rank from his current 1294th position after the victory.
Woods would only be inches away from entering the top 50 in the world. If he manages to pull it off, it will be his highest position in almost two years. His ranking stooped considerably low because he was out of play after the 2021 car accident.
Even after his competitive comeback at the 2022 Masters, things have been rocky for the legendary golfer. He faced another scare after he was forced to withdraw from the Hero World Challenge that he annually hosts after suffering from plantar fasciitis.
Now, however, it seems like Woods is slowly but steadily making progress and stepping back into the game.
Has Tiger Woods never the Genesis Invitational before?
A long and illustrious history precedes Tiger Woods. The golfer has 82 PGA Tour wins to his name, which has him tied for the top spot with Sam Snead. Despite so many titles already won by him, surprisingly he has never won the Genesis Invitational ever.
The closest he has ever come to winning the event was in 1988 when the tournament was called the Nissan Open. He lost in a playoff to Billy Mayfair. In 1989, Woods lost to Ernie Els in another playoff.
Maybe it's determination or maybe it's vengeance but whatever it is, one thing is for sure - Tiger Woods would be more than eager to begin the tournament and win it.
