Tiger Woods registers career worst score of 85 at the Memorial tournament in Ohio
Tiger Woods recorded the worst performance of his career to date in the third round of the Memorial tournament in Ohio. The 14-time major champion scored 85 eclipsing his previous worst of 82 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in January.
After bogeys on the fourth and fifth holes, Woods double bogeyed on the eighth and ninth ones which saw him go six over par. Things got worse for the 39-year-old when he bogeyed on the 11th, 12th and 14th holes before getting one bak on the par five 15th.
On the 18th hole, his tee shot into a water hazard, then hit a bunker before finishing it off in five shots.
Woods had indicated before the start of the tournament that he is returning to top form after recent back problems.
Six-time major winner Nick Faldo admitted that it is more of a mental thing than anything else for Woods and he will bounce back soon.
“Three Masters ago, I was on the (practice) range watching Tiger hit beautiful fades and draws. He was hitting the ball fabulously. (Then) he walks to the first tee, two snap hooks.
“From that day on, I thought to myself, he’s not comfortable, he’s starting to fear shots. When you are fearing a shot before you hit it, we’re all in serious trouble,” he said.
18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus, who is also the host of this tournament felt that Woods should work on his problems on his own.
"He's the only one who can fix what he's got," Nicklaus said.
