Video: Graeme McDowell wins the French Open by four shots
Graeme McDowell won the French Open by four shots to clinch his ninth European Tour title.
The Northern Irishman’s up-and-down year continues, he’s missed the cut or won in each of his last eight events.
Graeme McDowell, French Open champion:
“Yeah, it’s nice. It was you that said it, you know, binary numbers – that’s the way I’ve been playing golf this year – zeros and ones. The ‘ones’ (wins) are very special, let’s be honest, the ‘zeros’ (missing the cut) have done nothing but motivate me, make me more hungry for weekends like this one. I can hardly believe it really. Merion (US Open) doesn’t seem that long ago and, like I say, that was motivation for me, missing the cut at the Irish Open was motivation for me. I’ve always believed that I could do something on this golf course… and I executed my game-plan incredibly well this week, hit a lot of greens, hung in there with the putter coming in today. And I’m very proud, I have to say. I’m a proud French Open winner.”
Richard Sterne, French Open runner-up:
“Yeah, it’s a bit of a tough pill to swallow obviously being close all the way. I would have liked to have pushed him up the last but I made a couple of soft bogeys on 16 and 17, so that kind of handed it him, and I made a good four on 18, at least, to finish second.”
