Luke Donald holds a single shot lead at the end of the rain interrupted first day of the US Open on Thursday.
Phil Mickelson arrived at Merion Golf Club just hours before his 7:11am tee time but the American made a strong start to the Championship.
He had flown in overnight from San Diego after watching his oldest daughter graduate from the eighth grade.
But Mickelson shot three-under-par round of 67, his lowest opening round in the championship since 1999.
Tiger Woods sank a sublime 45-foot effort at the sixth hole to pull himself back to one-over-par.
But a further bogey at the ninth took him to two-over-par after ten holes when play was stopped due to failing light.
Rory McIlroy lies on level par after 11 holes, but the man holding the lead after a day of disruption is Luke Donald.
Donald has five holes of his opening round remaining and currently lies at four-under-par, one shot ahead of Mickelson and Adam Scott.
