Video: Zach Johnson leads Open Championship

Zach Johnson holds the lead at five-under-par after the first round of the Open Championship at Muirfield, Scotland on Thursday.

The 142nd Open Championship got underway at Muirfield in Scotland on Thursday.

The wind wasn’t too much of a hindrance for the morning starters, but the greens were very fast having baked in the unseasonably dry Scottish weather.

Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiminez enjoyed one of the earliest tee times carding a competitive three-under-par 68.

Bouncing back from his disappointing playoff defeat in the John Deere Classic on Sunday Zach Johnson had a superb start to his Open campaign.

He currently sits at five-under-par leading the championship after day one.

Just one shot back is Rafael Cabrera-Bello.

The young Spaniard dealt with the conditions admirably, and enjoyed a round that included six birdies and just two bogeys.

Winner of the Scottish Open in Inverness earlier this month, Phil Mickelson arrived at Muirfield in good from.

The left hander made a great start to his campaign with a two under 69.

One shot further ahead – and level with Cabrera-Bello – is Mark O’Meara.

The Open champion from 1998 at Birkdale made the turn with a five-under-par 31, but was one of many who faltered on the back nine.

World number one and bookies favourite Tiger Woods endured a mixed day out on the course.

Five birdies and three bogeys peppered his scorecard, but he finished up at the 18th with a 69, two-under-par, and very much in striking distance of leader Zach Johnson.
