Falcons sign QB Matt Ryan to record five-year extension
Matt Ryan has signed a lucrative five-year contract extension with the Atlanta Falcons, the team announced on Thursday.
The 32-year-old is reported by ESPN to have signed a deal worth $150million, making Ryan the first quarterback to earn $30m per year with $100m guaranteed.
That would surpass Jimmy Garoppolo, who signed a five-year contract worth $137.5m with the San Francisco 49ers in February, to become the highest paid player in NFL history.
Ryan was set to earn $19.25m in 2018 and count $21.65m against the team's salary cap before the new deal was negotiated.
Ryan, who turns 33 this month, was selected by the Falcons with the number three overall pick of the 2008 NFL Draft. The All-Pro selection has led his team to six playoff berths and a Super Bowl appearance.
