Matt Simms: The Solution to the Jets Quarterback Woes?
The preseason is often a time where players make their mark on making or missing a roster. There have been notable players who have made rosters just because of the preseason and have gone on to greatness. This leads us to often wonder if a guy who performs well in the preseason is either the next big thing or just a guy who has a good game against second and third teamers. This is the case with current Jets QB Matt Simms, who came in as the 4th QB (most teams only keep two) behind the notorious Mark Sanchez, rookie 2nd round pick Geno Smith, and big mouth Greg McElroy.
It’s known that he has the best arm strength of this group and is the most prototypical of the group at 6’3? 210 lbs. The 24 year old out of Tennessee has shined throughout the preseason and saved his best for the last game of the preseason as he went 33 of 44 for 285 yards against the Eagles.
Now, granted most will say it’s second and third teamers who care, but the fact is none of the other QB’s have been nearly as accurate as Simms has been. Simms should be kept on the Jets roster as the third quarterback and Greg McElroy should be cut. McElroy doesn’t nearly have the upside of Simms. If Geno and Mark struggle the way most people believe they will I think giving Simms a look wouldn’t be much of a risk and could be a huge reward to a franchise desperately needing a quarterback.
And did I mention he’s the son of Giant great, Phil Simms?
