Panthers QB Newton to begin rehab on Monday after successful surgery

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is set to begin rehabilitation next week after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Newton went under the knife on Thursday on his throwing arm to repair a partially torn rotator cuff and is scheduled to start the rehab process on Monday.

"Head team physician Dr. Pat Connor performed surgery this morning [Thursday] at Carolinas Medical Center to repair Cam Newton's partially torn rotator cuff," head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion told the Panthers' website.

"Dr. Connor was pleased with the results of the surgery and Cam is at home resting. He will begin his rehab program Monday."

Vermillion estimated Newton could begin a throwing regimen 12 weeks after surgery and start throwing with the team after 16 weeks.

Though he will not be attempting passes at OTAs next month, the Panthers expect Newton to be fully healthy for the start of training camp in July.

Newton suffered the injury against the then San Diego Chargers in December.

While he did not miss any time, the Panthers limited his activity as the season neared a close and Carolina failed to make the playoffs one campaign after falling to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.
