Trubisky goes top five and the Browns get their QB - Predicting the 2017 NFL Draft first round

The annual NFL Draft is upon us, with all 32 teams set to bolster their roster with seven rounds of selections that will all be intensely scrutinised.

There is almost a consensus view as to who the first pick will be, and here Omnisport's Nicholas McGee makes his predictions for the opening round.

 

1. Cleveland Browns - Myles Garrett, Defensive End (Texas A&M) - The obvious choice, even the Browns shouldn't be able to mess this one up. Garrett is a future All-Pro in the making.

2. San Francisco 49ers - Malik Hooker, Safety (Ohio State) - The 49ers' GM, John Lynch, was an All-Pro safety. It makes sense that his first pick is a safety who is an great fit for their defense.

3. Chicago Bears - Marshon Lattimore, Cornerback (Ohio State) - Chicago have spent recent drafts building up the defensive trenches, but the secondary could certainly use improvement.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars -  Mitchell Trubisky, Quarterback (North Carolina) - The Jags claim they have faith in Blake Bortles, but Trubisky can put pressure on the starter.

5. Tennessee Titans - Corey Davis, Wide Receiver (Western Michigan) - Tennessee would ideally like to trade this pick, however, if they can't then the best receiver in the draft is in play.

6. New York Jets - O.J Howard, Tight End (Alabama) - Howard was a matchup nightmare at Alabama and would give the Jets at a playmaker at a position where they lack talent.

7. Los Angeles Chargers - Solomon Thomas, Defensive End (Stanford) - Thomas' ability to generate interior pressure will aid a Chargers' team transitioning to a new defense.

8. Carolina Panthers - Christian McCaffrey, Running Back (Stanford) - McCaffrey's skills as a runner and a receiver would be a great help to Cam Newton.

9. Cincinnati Bengals - Garrett Bolles, Tackle (Utah) - The Bengals' offensive line was gutted in free agency, Bolles is a very athletic tackle and would go some way to patching things up.

10. Buffalo Bills - Jamal Adams, Safety (LSU) - Buffalo's defense could certainly use another tone-setter, Adams is exactly that.

11. New Orleans Saints - Tre'Davious White, Cornerback (LSU) - The Saints' defense is bad. White, with his abilities as a cover corner and ball skills, should help the secondary.

12. Cleveland Browns - Patrick Mahomes II, Quarterback (Texas Tech) - Mahomes is the wildcard of the QB class, but has the upside to develop into the franchise passer the Browns need.

13. Arizona Cardinals - Mike Williams, Wide Receiver (Clemson) - Larry Fitzgerald is in the twilight of his career, Williams is a ready-made replacement.

14. Philadelphia Eagles - Leonard Fournette, Running Back (LSU) - The best pure running-back in the class will aid the development of quarterback Carson Wentz.

15. Indianapolis Colts - Jonathan Allen, Defensive Tackle (Alabama) - Colts GM Chris Ballard wants to focus on the trenches and Allen significantly improves the defensive line.

16. Baltimore Ravens - David Njoku, Tight End (Miami) - The Ravens have the foundation of a contender but lack playmakers - enter Njoku, an athletic freak at the tight end position.

17. Washington Redskins - Budda Baker, Safety (Washington) - The versatile Baker would be a big boost to a Redskins defense in need of improvement if they are to take the next step.

18. Tennessee Titans - Reuben Foster, Linebacker (Alabama) - Off-field issues have emerged late in the process, but there's no doubting Foster's athleticism as a play-making linebacker.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Charles Harris, Defensive End (Missouri) - Harris can pair with Noah Spence, who the Bucs drafted last year, and give Tampa a exciting duo of young ends.

20. Denver Broncos - Cam Robinson, Tackle (Alabama) - Denver's offensive line was a mess last year. Robinson, who could kick inside to guard, has what it takes to change that.

21. Detroit Lions - Haason Reddick, Linebacker (Temple) - A late riser in the process, Reddick can excel as an off-ball linebacker and as a pass rusher off the edge.

22. Miami Dolphins - Forrest Lamp, Guard (Western Kentucky) - Lamp is small for his college position of tackle, but brings a nastiness that is much-needed on the interior for Miami.

23. New York Giants - Ryan Ramczyk, Tackle (Wisconsin) - If Eli Manning is to have another fairytale playoff run, he needs better protection.

24. Oakland Raiders - Marlon Humphrey, Cornerback (Alabama) - The Raiders remain very vulnerable to the deep ball, bringing in Humphrey would be a good way to remedy that issue.

25. Houston Texans - Zach Cunningham, Linebacker (Vanderbilt) - After leading the SEC - the top collegiate conference - in tackles, think what Cunningham could do playing with J.J Watt.

26. Seattle Seahawks - Malik McDowell, Defensive Tackle (Michigan State) - McDowell adds another talented interior rusher to a team blessed with a plethora of dominant defenders.

27. Kansas City Chiefs - DeShaun Watson, Quarterback (Clemson) - Alex Smith is far from the long-term answer for the Chiefs, Watson can compete to replace him as early as this season.

28. Dallas Cowboys - Gareon Conley, Cornerback (Ohio State) - Many expect Conley to go higher, but off-field issues could see him drop and he would be a big help to Dallas.

29. Green Bay Packers - Takkarist McKinley, Defensive End (UCLA) - The pass rush and the secondary are Green Bay's biggest concerns, McKinley addresses the former.

30. Pittsburgh Steelers - John Ross, Wide Receiver (Washington) - The fastest man in Combine history playing with Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant? Scary.

31. Atlanta Falcons - Jordan Willis, Defensive End (Kansas State) - Atlanta cannot rely solely on Vic Beasley to generate pass rush if they are to get back to the Super Bowl.

32. New Orleans Saints - T.J. Watt, Linebacker (Wisconsin) - J.J's younger brother has the power and motor to help New Orleans pressure the quarterback more consistently.
