GTA 3 (2001) was the first video game that put Rockstar Games in the limelight of the video game scene. It was not only a revolution in the Grand Theft Auto series but also set new bars for the entire gaming industry. Being the first-ever 3D open-world game was one of its major features. The American gaming studio also included numerous little details that were unique at the time.

With that being said, this article lists five little details in GTA 3 that made it a revolutionary title in the early 2000s.

1) NPC criminals

The Grand Theft Auto series revolves around crimes and criminals. GTA 3 also follows the same path. While Claude, the protagonist, is a silent killer, you can also witness various other NPC criminals in the open world.

These criminals often appear at night and perform various criminal activities like in real life. You can see them stealing things from other NPCs, hijacking cars, and engaging in shootouts.

2) Unique sound effects

One of the most intriguing facts about Grand Theft Auto 3 is that it uses unique sound effects. For example, when you run someone over with a vehicle, you will hear a squeaking sound to denote they're being crushed. The engine sounds of the vehicle also change depending on their damage level.

While these sound effects were not essential for the main gameplay, Rockstar Games has been known for its attention to detail. The inclusion of such minor details in GTA 3 is what set the bar in the early 2000s.

3) Real-life Easter eggs

An integral part of the series, you can still find Easter eggs in Grand Theft Auto Online. GTA 3 offers real-life references with some unique twists. For example, the game includes indirect references to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, and Sylvester Stallone, who were wildly popular during their prime.

Moreover, you can find a movie poster named Badfellas, which is an obvious reference to the real-life Hollywood film Goodfellas. Also, Rockstar did not shy away from promoting itself in the game. You can find the studio’s logo and even the game’s name in various places.

4) Realistic litter

Since Liberty City is inspired by real-life New York City, Rockstar Games included similar types of litter in GTA 3. You can find newspapers and tree leaves scattered on roads and various corners. These details are also present in the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy remastered version.

However, the most intriguing thing is that the litter also has in-game physics. You can see newspapers and leaves moving on the ground whenever a speeding vehicle passes by. They are affected by the wind produced by the vehicle and shift their position accordingly.

5) Ambiance noise

Ambiance noise is something that only earpiece users get to enjoy. In GTA 3, various buildings and neighborhoods generate unique sounds that are only audible with an earpiece. Therefore, it is highly recommended to play Grand Theft Auto games, including the GTA Trilogy Netflix edition, with headphones on.

You can hear music from certain buildings, people talking, and various other ambient noises. These sounds also play without an earpiece but are very subtle and difficult to detect.
