5 reasons why GTA Online shouldn't go on for another 10 years

Launched on October 1, 2013, GTA Online is one of the longest-running multiplayer video games. It is one of the most valuable assets in Rockstar Games’ basket and has substantially profitted the gaming studio. The game started as a part of Grand Theft Auto 5 and became a standalone product in 2022. Although the studio still actively promotes it, many veteran players are getting weary of it.

This article lists five reasons why Rockstar Games should not stretch GTA Online for another 10 years.

Why GTA Online should not be continued for 10 more years

1) It’s been over a decade already

Both Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online are the longest-running games in the Grand Theft Auto series so far; they are about to complete 11 years this fall.

While the player base initially expected GTA Online to run for around five years or so, Rockstar Games has shown no sign of shutting it down. Although some players left the game a long time ago, a significant portion of the fanbase is still playing it. However, the studio should not take fans for granted and stretch the title for another 10 years.

2) Player demography will change after GTA 6

The delayed release date of Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the main reasons why fans are still playing GTA Online after 10 years. However, once the new game is released, players will likely switch to it immediately and leave the current multiplayer title for good.

Even though old-gen consoles and PC users might stick with GTA Online for a while after 2025, they will likely also switch games once Rockstar announces Grand Theft Auto 6 for PC.

3) The game feels outdated

There are various old and new factors that make GTA Online feel outdated in 2024. Rockstar Games has lowered its efforts towards the game to focus on the development of Grand Theft Auto 6. Considering the hype for the upcoming title, it is nearly certain that the studio won’t get any time to focus on the multiplayer game.

Therefore, Rockstar Games must not try to extend Grand Theft Auto Online and should instead conclude it on a good note. Once GTA 6 becomes available on all major platforms, Grand Theft Auto Online servers should be shut down.

4) Many fans don’t even play the multiplayer

While Rockstar Games continues to make profits from Grand Theft Auto 5 sales, many fans don’t even play GTA Online. A majority of the player base is either engaged in Story Mode or on Grand Theft Auto 5 RP servers on PC. Despite being a decade old, the story of the 2013 title is still one of the greatest ever made.

Moreover, the RP server offers fresh new modded content every now and then, allowing players to enjoy a unique multiplayer experience. GTA Online only sees a player surge when Rockstar Games releases a new DLC update.

5) Rockstar should focus on GTA 6’s story DLCs

Rockstar Games planned and also canceled Grand Theft Auto 5 DLCs in favor of GTA Online. However, the same mistake should not be repeated with the next title.

The studio must release story DLCs for Grand Theft Auto 6 in the future. For that to happen, it must first give up on Grand Theft Auto Online once GTA 6 is available on PC and the latest consoles.
