Free GTA 5 Online on PS Plus: All you need to know
GTA 5 Online is once again part of the PlayStation Plus (or simply PS Plus) Game Catalog. This means those with an active PS Plus Extra or Premium subscription can access the popular Rockstar Games title for free. The game was added to the Game Catalog back in December 2023 but later removed in June 2024.
Now that GTA 5 Online has been readded, those interested (and subscribed to PS Plus Extra or Premium) can download and play it on their PlayStation 4/5 (PS4/PS5) console at no additional cost. With that said, here are some things you should know about the game and the offer.
GTA 5 Online is now available for free in the PS Plus Game Catalog
The addition of Grand Theft Auto 5 in the PS Plus Game Catalog means those subscribed to the eligible tiers can access its story mode and multiplayer for free. The story mode provides several hours of content in the form of the main campaign featuring three protagonists (Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, Trevor Philips) along with many side missions and activities.
The multiplayer, known as Grand Theft Auto Online, also has tons of content. Rockstar Games has regularly released free major DLCs for it over the years. The last one, as of this writing, is Bottom Dollar Bounties, which arrived in June. A GTA Online Winter DLC will also be released in December 2024.
Free GTA 5 Online on PS Plus: Which subscription is required?
PS Plus has various subscription tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Those subscribed to either of the latter two – PS Plus Extra or Premium – get access to the Game Catalog, and hence, can download and play Grand Theft Auto 5 Online for free.

Both PS4 and PS5 versions of Grand Theft Auto 5 Online have been added to the PS Plus Game Catalog.
Free GTA 5 Online on PS Plus: What is the difference between the PS4 and PS5 versions?
Grand Theft Auto 5 Online's PS5 version has additional features, such as three graphics modes – Fidelity, Performance, and Performance RT. There are also a few new GTA Online-exclusive features in the PS5 version, like HSW Performance upgrades for specific vehicles, the Vinewood Car Club, and monthly in-game GTA+ subscription benefits, to name a few.
Furthermore, animals were added to the open world of GTA Online only on PS5 (and Xbox Series X/S) last year, whereas the Rockstar Editor was removed from the PS4 (and Xbox One) version. Some users have even reported performance issues in the last-gen version of the multiplayer lately.
PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers can only access GTA 5 Online for free from the Game Catalog while their subscription is active, and as long as the title remains part of this catalog.
