Ex-Rockstar dev doesn’t think GTA 6 will be "wildly different from GTA 5": Report
Despite being far from its release, GTA 6 has already become one of the most anticipated video game sequels in history. Over the past couple of years, fans have developed certain expectations from Rockstar Games regarding the upcoming title. From providing the biggest map to explore to next-gen graphics, there’s much that gamers want from Grand Theft Auto 6.
However, it seems that fans might have to lower their expectations from the unreleased game according to an ex-Rockstar employee. In an online interview with YouTuber SanInPlay on July 22, 2024, the former developer Obbe Vermeij stated the following:
“I don’t think it’s going to be wildly different from GTA 5.”
GTA 6 may not be a big leap from Grand Theft Auto 5 as per the former Rockstar developer
YouTuber SanInPlay posted a video titled "INTERVIEW with OBBE VERMEIJ - Former Rockstar Games Developer!," with almost a 50-minute long conversation with the guest.
Around the 32:00 time stamp of the footage, Vermeij was asked by the host about their expectations from GTA 6. Despite declining to have any sort of information, the ex-dev shared their opinion on how the game is going to be based on its trailer 1 released on December 5, 2024.
According to their analysis of the trailer, the NPCs on the beach look very vibrant as each of them was doing different things at the same time, “like every character got its own animation,” said Vermeij.
While Vermeij admitted that GTA 6 looks pretty amazing so far, he stated that he doesn't think the game will be extremely different from its immediate predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 5. He speculated that this might cause some disappointment among the fans upon the title's release.
According to the source, it’s hard for Rockstar Games to show a significant change in Grand Theft Auto 6 from the previous entry because the technology gap between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 is not that significant.
However, Obbe Vermeij assured the host and fans that Grand Theft Auto 6 is still going to be the “best game out there.” He further showed admiration for the Miami vibe of the game, saying, “I think that suits GTA very well.”
Regarding certain rumors related to the technology used in the game, the former Rockstar employee said the following:
“I think there’s definitely time for a revolution where animation is maybe not hand animated anymore, but it would be more AI-driven and physics-driven.”
Fans should take every comment made by Obbe Vermeij on Grand Theft Auto 6 with a grain of salt. Rockstar Games is expected to share more official news about the title soon.
