GTA 6 Online to possibly get modding support: Report

GTA 6 Online is rumored to get official modding support. While Rockstar Games has yet to reveal the next version of the online multiplayer, fans have found some clues that hint at a possible modding tool integration in the upcoming game. According to a recent report by @GTAFocal on X who interviewed several ex-FiveM employees, the gaming studio is preparing to introduce modding and user-generated content in Grand Theft Auto 5 Online.

However, since Rockstar Games has yet to confirm the news, it remains a rumor for the time being.

GTA 6 Online will reportedly have official modding and user-generated content support

The interview report published by GTA Focal shared various inside details about GTA 6 Online. Before that, you’ll have to know the chronology of events.

Rockstar Games officially acquired FiveM, also known as Cfx.re, in August 2023, which hosts various Grand Theft Auto 5 RP servers. The FiveM employees later realized that the American studio was already developing a rival tool, which failed eventually.

However, with the acquisition of Cfx.re, it became easy for Rockstar to control and examine how the tool works. The studio released a new DLC update to Grand Theft Auto Online in June 2024, which added a “Mission Creator” tool for all platforms. Popular insider and data miner Tez2 (X/@TezFunz2) found it on the PC files, and stated that it was “currently empty”.

This tool is rumored to add FiveM on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and also allow Grand Theft Auto Online players to create their own modded gameplay.

The report stated:

“This is highly likely connected to the new Rockstar project, which…is expected to be integrated into GTA Online later this year in early fall, with the next-gen consoles following shortly…”

Some sources also stated that the gaming studio has been developing a new game engine named ROME - Rockstar Original Mod Engine. This under-developed engine is rumored to be integrated into Grand Theft Auto 5 Online as a test, and will later be added in GTA 6 Online.

Many fans believe that ROME, Missor Creator, and FiveM on consoles are parts of the same project that Rockstar has been preparing for GTA 6 Online. However, nothing can be said for sure until the drip-feed content for the Bottom Dollar Bounties DLC officially ends.
