GTA Online server down issue detected, possible DDoS attacks
Since September 21, 2024, some players may be experiencing a GTA Online server down issue every now and then. Those affected by this may get error messages like “Rockstar Games online services are unavailable right now” or “files required to play GTA Online could not be downloaded”. While the developer hasn’t commented on the situation at the time of writing, it looks like there had been continuous DDOS attacks on Rockstar Games servers.
According to a report by @morsmutual_ on X on September 21, 2024, GTA servers were recently down because of some DDoS attacks from a group of people opposing the new BattlEye anti-cheat system.
While there’s not much gamers can do to fix the error if the DDoS attacks continue, there are some steps that one can follow to make sure the server connection is restored as quickly as possible.
GTA Online server status: Is GTA Online down?
Before starting the troubleshooting, it’s always recommended to check the official status of GTA Online servers or Rockstar service status. Here’s a link with the help of which one can check if the servers are currently operational:

GTA Online server down: Troubleshooting steps to follow
The Grand Theft Auto Online server down issue, or the possible DDoS attacks, can also affect gamers’ internet connection in some situations. To make sure your internet isn’t affected, and the connection gets restored as soon as possible, it’s important to check if things are fine at your end.
To help you with that, here are some steps to troubleshoot any possible connection issues on your end:
Many gamers use a firewall or router to access the internet. If you use one of these, access them and change their NAT type as soon as possible. Make sure these network ports are open in the settings:
- Port 6672 (UDP)
- Port 61455 (UDP)
- Port 61457 (UDP)
- Port 61456 (UDP)
- Port 61458 (UDP)
If the ports are open, you must proceed to change your Domain Name Servers (DNS):
- Open the settings.
- Go to the Internet or Network.
- Click on Advanced Network Settings.
- Choose Change Adaptor.
- Right-click on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection (whichever you use to connect to Grand Theft Auto Online servers).
- Select Properties.
- Turn on the IPv4/TCP if it’s off.
- Click on Properties once again.
- Select "Use the following DNS" or a similar option.
- Enter this as your Preferred DNS server - "8.8.8.8".
- Enter this as your Alternate DNS server - "8.8.4.4".
- Select Validate Settings.
- Click on Ok.
- Similarly, make sure TCP/IPv6 is turned on.
- Select Properties.
- Enter this as your Preferred DNS server - 2001:4860:4860:8888
- Enter this as your Alternate DNS server - 2001:4860:4860:8844
- Click on Validate Settings.
- Select Ok.
You can also try resetting your internet connection simply by unplugging the network adaptor or router for about 10 minutes.

When will GTA servers be back up?
As of October 17, 2024, the servers are back up and stable on Rockstar's official page; however, the problem may still persist for some gamers at different time intervals due to more possible DDoS attacks. If gamers experience any sort of network issue, the best thing would be to follow all of the aforementioned troubleshooting steps.
