Valve and Rockstar reportedly working to fix GTA Online BattlEye on Steam Deck issue
Rockstar Games released the GTA Online BattlEye update for PC on September 17, 2024, in an attempt to protect players from cheaters and hackers in multiplayer lobbies. While it is a step in the right direction, it made Steam Deck no longer supported for online multiplayer. Rockstar Games guided everyone to contact Valve for any queries related to the situation.
Fortunately, one Reddit user u/notjordansime reportedly contacted Valve’s Steam Support on September 18, 2024, and got a response from them where they claimed they are currently working with Rockstar Games to fix the issue.
GTA Online could soon become playable on Steam Deck once again post-BattlEye update
As can be seen above, u/notjordansime shared a screenshot where they contacted Valve’s Steam Support about GTA Online being unsupported on Steam Deck after the BattlEye Anti-Cheat update, and even got a positive response from them. Here’s what they asked the company:
“Seeing as parts of the game are not accessible to Steam Deck users, I’m struggling to understand why it has a 'Playable' rating.”
They further added their thoughts on the "Playable" tag by calling it misleading:
“I would argue that the 'Playable' tag is somewhat misleading.”
In the end, they said that they hope for Rockstar to reverse its decision and enable Steam Deck support for GTA 5 as it’s the only game they play on the handheld platform nowadays.
Here’s how the company responded to their query:
“I am sorry to hear about the issues that you are experiencing with Grand Theft Auto 5. We understand that it is frustrating for the users who purchased this game we are currently working with Rockstar Games to find a fix.”
While this doesn’t guarantee a fix, it is good to know that Valve is possibly working with Rockstar Games to get this issue resolved.

GTA Online BattlEye anti-cheat update: Other known problems so far
Apart from the ongoing Steam Deck incompatibility problem, here are the other issues with BattlEye that have been acknowledged by Rockstar Games officially on their support page:
- BattlEye on GTA Online won’t work properly if PC users have ReShade or Special_K graphics mods installed.
- BattlEye won’t work properly if PC users have AVG or Trend Micro anti-virus programs installed
Keep in mind that Rockstar Games also tries to fix known issues as soon as possible; however, it seems that Valve has to work collaboratively with the developers to fix the Steam Deck issue.
