YouTuber runs GTA 5 on Nintendo Switch by increasing its RAM

While many gamers dream of playing GTA 5 on the Nintendo Switch, Rockstar Games shows no sign of making it a reality. However, a YouTuber named naga (@nag3030) went above and beyond and ran 13 PC games on the handheld console, including the mammoth Grand Theft Auto 5.

Note that while Rockstar released the title in 2013, Switch was released in 2017. Still, running GTA 5 on Nintendo Switch was considered a near-impossible task until now.

Running GTA 5 on Nintendo Switch is reportedly possible with a RAM increase

On June 28, 2024, YouTuber naga posted the above video where they demonstrated playing GTA 5 and various other games on the Nintendo Switch. While the console comes with 4 GB RAM, it was increased to 8 GB.

After that, naga played through the Prologue mission. While it didn't show the crazy details included in GTA 5, the gameplay looked fairly smooth, almost similar to running on a low-end PC.

The YouTuber was getting a fairly stable framerate of around 22 frames per second. Sometimes, it also clocked to 26 FPS.

After GTA 5 on Nintendo Switch, naga ran Bully, which is one of the most popular titles from Rockstar Games’ 3D Universe. Bully is very small compared to Grand Theft Auto 5. It was able to run at around 30 FPS on the modded console.

Notably, the YouTuber didn't show driving the best cars in Grand Theft Auto 5 or walking in free roam. Those instances are more demanding on the hardware. This could be why they demonstrated only a fraction of the Prologue mission where free movements were quite limited.

The other games run by the YouTuber on the modded Nintendo Switch are as follows:

  • Final Fantasy VII Remake
  • Stray
  • Kena Bridge of Spirits
  • Devil May Cry 4
  • Call of Duty Black Ops
  • Castlevania Lords of Shadow
  • Battlefield 3
  • Watch Dogs
  • Tomb Raider Legends
  • Fallout New Vegas
  • Far Cry 3

Fans are keen to know whether Rockstar will release GTA 6 on Nintendo Switch 2.
