Sports Authority of India announces selection trials for Asian Senior Women’s Handball Championship 

The Sports Authority of India (SAI), on Saturday, November 16, announced the selection trials for the Indian team for the upcoming Asian Senior Women’s Handball Championship that will take place on November 21 and 22. SAI’s Gandhinagar centre will host the trials for the 20th edition of the tournament.

SAI also put forth the criteria and eligibility of the players for the competition. As per the sports body, players must have taken part in national or international championships at senior or junior levels to be eligible for the Asian Senior Women’s Handball Championship.

For the upcoming selection trials, the handball players have to report to the venue in proper sports attires. The athletes also need to bear their own expenses for travel and accommodation. The selection committee will take the final call in the trials after proper assessment. The trials will also be video-recorded.

The top four teams from the championship will qualify for the IHF Women’s Handball World Championship, which is set to be held next year from November 27 to December 14 in the Netherlands and Germany.

New Delhi is set to host the Asian Senior Women’s Handball Championship from December 3 to 10. The tournament will be conducted with the help of the Asian Handball Federation.


How did India perform in 19th Asian Senior Women’s Handball Championship?

India did not have the best of times when they took part in the previous edition of the tournament that took place in Incheon and Seoul in the Republic of Korea from November 24 to December 4, 2022. India managed to finished sixth in the competition two years ago.

The upcoming edition will be the eighth time when India will participate in the Asian Senior Women’s Handball Championship. India are yet to win a medal in the seven editions until now. South Korea are sitting on top with 19 medals (16 gold, two silver and one bronze).
