Manpreet Singh named India junior captain for 3rd Sultan of Johor Cup
Indian senior men’s hockey team midfielder Manpreet Singh will lead the national junior team in the upcoming 3rd Sultan of Johar Cup slated to be held at Ipoh, Malaysia from September 22-29.
Striker Affan Yousef will be the vice-captain of the side.
The 18-member squad will feature quite a few players of the senior team that took part in the 9th Asia Cup. Besides skipper Manpreet Singh, the team will have the services of midfielder Kothajit Singh, fullback Amit Rohidas, nippy striker Mandeep Singh and midfielder Satbir Singh, who featured in the 2013 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup but was not part of the Ipoh event.
The team has four players from the senior team among the standbys – SK Uthappa, Gurmail Singh, Malak Singh and Ramandeep Singh, who recently made his senior international debut in the Asia Cup.
The team was picked by Hockey India selectors Mr. B P Govinda, Mr. Syed Ali, Dr. R P Singh and Mr. Gregg Clark, foreign coach of junior men’s team and Mr. Baljeet Singh Saini, coach of junior men’s team along with Government Observer Harbinder Singh during the two-day selection trials held at Major Dhyanchand National Stadium in New Delhi on August 28 and 29.
The selectors have picked a 18-member squad and 9 standbys.
The Indian junior team will attend an eleven-day preparatory camp at the Major Dhyanchand National Stadium in New Delhi from September 7 to 17.
Six teams are taking part in the 3rd Sultan of Johar Cup – Argentina, England, Korea, Malaysia and Pakistan will slug it out for top honours along with India.
