Asian Champions Trophy 2024: When and where to watch the tournament?
The Asian Champions Trophy 2024 is set to begin on Sunday, September 8, at the Moqi Training Base in Hulunbuir, China. Six of Asia's hockey superpowers will compete in the tournament, which is the first major competition for India after winning their second consecutive bronze in the Paris Olympics 2024.
India, ranked fifth in the world, is one of the favorites heading into the event. The tournament will be played in a round-robin format, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals.
The six participating nations are India, Malaysia (ranked 13th), the Republic of Korea (ranked 14th), Japan (ranked 15th), Pakistan (ranked 16th), and China (ranked 23rd). The top four teams after the round-robin stage will qualify for the semi-finals, while classification matches will determine the final standings.
India enters the competition as the defending champions, having won the title four times in the past, most recently in 2023. Harmanpreet Singh will continue to captain the Indian team, while Vivek Sagar Prasad takes on the role of vice-captain.
Veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh retired after the Paris 2024 Olympics, and India will now rely on Krishan Bahadur Pathak and Suraj Karkera between the posts.
Asian Champions Trophy 2024: When to watch India’s matches?
India’s quest for yet another Asian Champions Trophy title began on Sunday, September 8, when they took on hosts China in the opening match at 3:30 PM IST. They ended up winning the game 3-0.
Just a day later, India will face off against Japan on Monday at 1:15 PM IST. The real challenge, however, awaits them on Wednesday, September 11 at 1:15 PM, when they clash with Malaysia.
As the tournament progresses, India will need to remain sharp for their encounter against South Korea on Thursday, September 12.
The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan clash, one of the most fierce rivalries in international hockey, will take place on Saturday, September 14.
Historically, Pakistan leads the head-to-head record against India with 82 wins to India’s 66. However, India has dominated in recent years, winning 14 of the last 16 encounters.
