“Delhi SG Pipers have incredible talent” - Bichu Devi Kharibam expresses confidence ahead of HIL 2024-25 [Exclusive]
Bichu Devi Kharibam is confident that the Delhi SG Pipers possess enough strength and skill to triumph in the inaugural women’s Hockey India League (HIL). The Indian goalkeeper believes her team boasts a perfect balance of youth and pedigree that will bolster them in going all the way.
Kharibam will be sharing the dressing room with the likes of ace Belgian goalkeeper Elodie Picard and talented Indian forward Sunelita Toppo. Kharibam was in a conversation with Sportskeeda at the Senior Women's Inter-Department National Championship held last month.
“The Delhi SG Pipers have managed to rack up a great squad with some incredible talent. I am excited to be a part of this setup. There is just that perfect balance of youth and experience in our team which will help us build a solid gameplan. We are a strong side and will put in our best to go all the way,” said Bichu.
Kharibam, the 24-year-old from Manipur, was picked up by the Pipers for ₹16 lakh at the first-ever HIL women’s player auction. For the goalie, the historic event was a special one albeit some understandable moments of nervousness.
“It is something that all of us were experiencing for the first time in our lives. It was a special feeling to see my name come up but I was also anxious as I wondered if I’ll be picked. Initially no one raised their paddles but then it all turned out pretty well,” she added.
“The Indian Women’s Team has a great mindset” - Bichu Devi Kharibam opens up on missing out on Paris Olympics
Bichu Devi Kharibam has been a part of the Indian national setup for around two years. She has been integral to the team's journey and has gone through many highs and lows with her mates. For her, missing out on the Paris Olympics 2024 was a significant setback for the side.
However, she is proud of the mindset that this Indian women’s team packs as it helped them bounce back with a lot more determination.
“We were all heartbroken when we missed on qualifying for Paris. A dream was shattered. But, we have a great mindset as a team which helped us not lose our spirit. I have special gratitude for everyone who supported us. Personally, a special thanks to my family who reiterated it to me that the nation is standing with us and this is not the end of life,” she concluded.
Much like her peers, the HIL brings with it plenty of new opportunities for Bichu Devi Kharibam to showcase her skills and abilities. She possesses plenty of talent to produce results for her team and help them succeed in their endeavor.
