Former Indian hockey team captain Rani Rampal announces retirement at age 29

One of India's most celebrated women’s hockey players Rani Rampal announced her retirement from the sport today (October 24). Rani, who has had a long and illustrious career spanning over a decade, is one of the most renowned names in all of women’s hockey.

The 29-year-old stated her decision during a media interaction. The former captain of the Indian women’s team shared how content she feels about her time in India colors. Calling her journey as an 'outstanding' one, Rani expressed her pride in representing the country.

"It's been an outstanding journey. I never thought I would play for so long for India. I have seen a lot of poverty from childhood but the focus was always to do something, represent the country," she told the media in a press conference.

Rani Rampal had become the youngest player to play for the Indian women’s team at the age of 14 in 2008. She made her debut in the Olympic Qualifier held in Kazan, Russia.

Since then, Rampal has represented the nation in numerous competitions around the globe. She played an instrumental role in the team’s showing during both the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Rani Rampal has etched her name in the folklore of Indian hockey. Her 15-year-long career saw the talented forward win plenty of applause and laudits from one and all. She was an important cog in the wheel for the Indian team in their triumphant run to being crowned the 2017 Asian Cup champions.

Rani also played a major part in India’s silver medal finish at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. She has also competed for the country at two Commonwealth Games (2014 and 2018).

For her numerous on-field heroics, Rampal was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2016. She was then bestowed with the Khel Ratna and the Padma Shri in 2020.
