Men's Senior Hockey Nationals 2024: Odisha beat Haryana 5-1 to win maiden title
Odisha defeated two-time champions Haryana 5-1 in the summit clash of the Men's Senior Hockey Nationals 2024 to clinch their maiden title on Saturday, November 16.
Akash Tirkey opened the scoring for the Hockey Association of Odisha in the 11th minute of the game. Both teams headed into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead for Odisha.
Pratap Lakra converted a penalty corner in the 39th minute to double Odisha's lead. Indian hockey team forward Shilanand Lakra (48', 57' & 60') scored a hat-trick to guide his state team to a thumping victory over Haryana. Joginder Singh was the lone goal-scorer for Haryana.
Both teams had a poor penalty corner conversion rate of 0 percent. Haryana were awarded 10 penalty corners but failed to convert any of them, while Odisha missed all four opportunities to score through a penalty corner. They will look to address the issue ahead of the upcoming competitions.
Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Hockey defeated Manipur Hockey 2-1 to win the third-place match at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai.
Uttar Pradesh captain and Indian team forward Lalit Kumar Upadhyay found the back of the net in the sixth minute. The score read 1-0 in favor of Uttar Pradesh at half-time.
Moirangthem Rabichandra Singh scored off a penalty corner in the 43rd minute to level the scores 1-1. Indian national team midfielder Rajkumar Pal brushed one past the goalkeeper in the 54th minute to hand Uttar Pradesh victory in a tight contest on Saturday.
Manipur were awarded six penalty corners and Uttar Pradesh received three penalty corners in the match. However, the two sides failed to convert any of their chances.
