"We are going to face some resistance from the Japanese team" - Coach Harendra Singh ahead of Women's ACT 2024 semi-final clash
The Indian women’s hockey team is all set to face Japan in the semi-final of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024. The match is set to take place on Tuesday, November 19, at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium.
As the anticipation builds, chief coach Harendra Singh and captain Salima Tete shared their thoughts on the team’s preparation, their strategy against Japan, and the overall morale within the camp while talking to the media ahead of the contest.
Reflecting on the upcoming challenge, Harendra Singh emphasized the importance of adaptability and focus.
“The training game and the pool matches are different. It is a semi-final,” he stated (via fih.hockey).
He explained how the Indian team is preparing with multiple plans ahead of the all-important clash.
“Players prepare with a plan A, plan B, plan C. Definitely, we are going to face some resistance from the Japanese team; they have a good side," he said.
Singh elaborated on India’s strategy, underlining the importance of exploiting opportunities and playing to the team’s strengths.
“We have to do our homework, where we want to exploit our chances, where we want to get the ball and how we want to play,” he added.
The coach expressed satisfaction with the team’s execution so far but cautioned against complacency.
“So far, the girls have executed really well. The way we wanted them to grow individually, take challenges, and make decisions, I am satisfied. But the semi-final will be a different ballgame," he remarked.
India captain Salima Tete shares dressing room atmosphere
Captain Salima Tete shared insights into the team’s positive spirit and unity. She described the lively atmosphere in the dressing room.
“After getting off the bus, Neha Di tells everyone that we all have to dance," she said.
She added that such activities boost the team's morale.
“There is a happiness mood. Whatever match we have, we think of staying active and enjoying together," she said.
“Everyone has happiness on their faces. This team bond is very good," she added, highlighting the positive atmosphere within the group.
On goal-scoring and mental toughness
When asked about the team’s finishing ability and mental resilience, coach Singh said that he is happy with the Indian team's planning and execution on the field.
While acknowledging the team’s progress, he identified areas for improvement.
“We are scoring good goals, but still, there is room for improvement. It comes with experience, understanding between the passer and the receiver, and handling pressure from opponents,” he explained.
Praising the team’s scoring consistency, Singh added:
“The kind of goals we have set in our team meetings, we are executing. Minimum three-goal margins are there in matches. What else can we ask?”
He also emphasized patience and long-term planning, along with his belief in the Indian women's hockey team.
“We can’t look at instant coffee; this is a process for 2026. These girls have the capacity to deliver results,” he affirmed.
Singh stressed the importance of shared responsibility in goal-scoring, stating the team cannot depend on one player alone.
"We’ve worked on creating a scoring mindset across all positions. It’s crucial to share the load to avoid overburdening any single player. The team’s flexibility ensures that the right person is always in position to capitalize," Singh explained.
He also touched on the collective mindset within the team, mentioning that each player is equally responsible and leadership is shared, which is the essence of modern hockey.
Captain Salima Tete also highlighted the supportive culture that drives the team forward.
“We play for each other and celebrate every moment together. That’s our biggest strength,” she said.
As India head into the semi-final clash, the team’s strong camaraderie, detailed preparation, and strategic focus will be key to overcoming Japan and securing a place in the final of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024.
