With disappointment coming in the doubles Badminton front, it’s up to the Indians competing in the singles tournament to keep the country’s medal hopes alive in the sport. All three of the singles badminton players – Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu and Srikanth Kidambi won their respective first matches in Rio 2016.
They will be looking to carry on this streak as they face their respective opponents in their second group stage matches. All three of them feature on Day 9 of the Olympics.
So far, Dipa Karmakar has created history as she became the first Indian female gymnast to qualify for a final round. Without a doubt, she will face tough competition. The finalists include American teenager Simone Biles who has become something of a sensation in the past few years. She is incomparable when it comes to technical skill and grace and has two gold medals to her name so far.
Dipa, on the other hand, is very skilled in her own way and will surely be determined to give her best shot. She has the support of an entire country with her.
Shooting has, so far, produced no medals even with a relatively strong contingent in hand. Shooters Jitu Rai and Abhinav Bindra came close to securing a medal in their corresponding events but missed out by a small margin in the last second.
However, India still seem to have a chance as Gagan Narang and Chain Singh feature in yet another event on this day.
In other categories, the women marathon runners of the Athletics squad OP Jaisha will start their Olympic participations while Manoj Kumar will try to fight his way into the Quarterfinals of his boxing category.
The men’s Hockey team qualified for the Quarterfinals and they face a tough test ahead against Belgium. Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna will also be in action, playing in the bronze medal playoff against the Czech pair of Radek Stepanek and Lucie Hradecka.
