Rio Olympics 2016: Roundup of all hockey matches from Day 4

Indian Men’s hockey team bounced back from their defeat to Germany and scripted a much-needed victory over Argentina by 2 goals to 1. Chinglensana Singh and Kothajit Singh were on target for the men in blue, taking them to third in Group B with the next fixture against Netherlands in two days’ time.

In the other fixture, Germany defeated the Irish team 3 goals to 2 in a closely fought match between the European giants. Ireland has qualified in Men’s hockey for the first time in 108 years. A couple of goals from Moritz Furste guided the Germans to a victory which took them to the top in the standings.

The Dutch team thrashed the men from Canada in 7-0 one-sided encounter, which saw a hat-trick has from Van der Weerden which helped them qualify for the quarter-finals along with Hockey players of Germany who has won all the ties.

In Group A, Spain and Germany continued their domination over other teams and got the better of the two teams from down-under. Spain won the match by a single goal margin defeating New Zealand 3-2 and maintained their all-win record.

Belgium rode their luck on a 16th-minute strike from Tanguy Cosyns after their 12-0 hammering over Brazil in the previous fixture. Meanwhile, Great Britain piled on the misery of hosts Brazil by virtue of a 9-1 thrashing which ended Brazil’s disappointing run at the Games.

With 9 points each from 3 games Belgium and Spain have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Rio Olympics. It will be interesting to see whether India manage to make a cut to the last eight.
