Rio Olympics 2016: Roundup of all hockey matches from Day 6
Day 6 has been concluded here in the city of Rio de Janeiro with the penultimate set of eight matches played, four each in the men’s and women’s hockey tournaments at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Deodoro.
Let us now take a look at all the hockey results from Day 6:
In Men’s Hockey, India created history by sealing their quarter-final berth despite a tough encounter against the Netherlands ending 2-1 in favour of the latter after a nail-biting final conclusion that saw the Men in Blue get 5 penalty corners to try and find a late equaliser which proved elusive. In the third Pool B match of the day, a last minute strike from Matthias Muller for the defending champions Germany pulled them back even to a 4-4 result with Argentina, which confirmed India’s progress to the last eight with one game still to go.
Ireland put four past the Canadian defence riding on Shane O’Donoghue’s first half brace, while the latter could manage only two in reply, Scott Tupper scoring on both occasions.
In the only Group A fixture of the day, Belgium made it four in four with a 3-1 victory over Spain, thus handing their European counterparts their first defeat of the campaign.
In Women’s Hockey, the Indian Eves failed to repeat their previous month’s performance as they were handed a 0-3 loss by the USA. Katie O’Donnell struck twice before Melissa Gonzalez wrapped things up with a 4th quarter goal.
Australia edged 1-0 past Argentina while Great Britain defeated Japan 2-0 by virtue of a goal each by Lily Owsley and Nicola White.
With India and Japan effectively out of the competition from Group B, Germany were beaten by Spain in the only Group A match of the night, Guinea and Salvatella scoring for Spain.
Saturday will be the last time Indian women take the field for the Women's hockey tournament in Rio 2016.
