Sports Ministry grants 10 lakh rupees for Hockey legend Mohammad Shahid's treatment

Union Sports Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has, on Sunday, announced a financial grant of ten lakh rupees to aid in the treatment of yesteryears’ hockey champion Mohammad Shahid.

Currently admitted in Medanta Medicity Hospital in the National Capital Region, the ace dribbler who had helped India fetch its last gold medal in Olympic hockey by scoring the winning goal against Spain in the first place clash at the 1980 Moscow Olympics is fighting a serious condition of the liver and kidney. So far, his medical expenses were being paid for by the employees of his beloved Indian Railways – an entity he has played, and subsequently worked for.

Dr. Singh visited Shahid at Medanta and extended the support of the Ministry towards the Arjuna Award winning sportsperson by declaring to bear the entirety of the costs incurred to treat his condition of hepatic failure with hepato-renal syndrome. He then took to social media to announce the ministry’s decision before going on to share some details of his interaction with the ailing star who had spoken to him in a feeble manner caused by his poor health.

“All medical expenses for Md Shahid reimbursed + Rs 10L from @YASMinistry at immediate disposal for overhead expenses” – read Dr. Jitendra Singh’s Twitter account. It was further learnt that Mr Shahid was on dialysis and was under close and continuous surveillance by the specialist doctors looking into his case.

However, on being requested to share pictures of his meeting with the legendary hockey player, Dr. Singh chose to politely decline, citing ethical reasons.
