V R Raghunath speaks about the Hockey India League

Below are excerpts from Indian national player VR Raghunath’s preview of the Hockey India League, where he talks about the quality of hockey that will be on display in the HIL, his ambitions, and how the league will help Indian hockey:

“The stakes have never been so high as far as hockey is considered, with the HIL soon making its debut in India. This is one of the most expensive hockey leagues of its kind, and therefore one can be assured of some great quality of hockey being displayed on the field. Hockey India and Mr. Narinder Batra are to be thanked as its their brainchild. It is going to raise the standard of the Indian hockey, as players will get a chance to play with some great foreign players.

“The league consists of 5 Olympic captains, which in itself is a big thing. Apart from them, the league has the best hockey players from around the world, and fans should prepare themselves for some thrilling performances. The HIL will help the grassroot structure develop, as many potential players will get a chance to play, and many others will be watching it happen in our country. When big tournaments like this one take place in one’s own country, one is motivated to work hard and play in it. The HIL is going to be a great learning platform, not just for youngsters but every Indian player. By the end of the tournament, everyone will leave with some substantial experience.

“The HIL will be a great help for players financially too. The auctions have been done in an impressive manner, and in a very balanced way. Every team has a great combination of players, which increases the levels of competition. I will be playing for Sahara Uttar Pradesh Wizards. We are a pretty good combination and can boast of having the highest paid player of the league, Teun de Nooijer. He is going to be the marquee player for us. Apart from him, we have a fair number of quality Indian players playing in our side along with players from Australia, Spain and Netherlands.

“Since this will be the first league season, we cannot work on strategies against the other teams, as we are yet to play against each other. Once the league gets started, we will know what to expect as we will be more familiar with the playing styles of the opponents. Sahara is a great corporate house which has been associated with not only hockey, but other sports too for a long time now. It is going to be a privilege to play for their team. Also, I am glad that other big corporate houses in India have come forward and are supporting this league. I hope it reaps them maximum benefits.”
