Women's Asian Champions Trophy 2024: India vs Malaysia preview, head to head, starting lineup, prediction, and live-streaming details

Hosts India will play Malaysia in their opening match of the Women's Asian Champions Trophy 2024 on Monday, November 11, at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium. This is the eighth edition of the tournament and all matches will be played at the same venue throughout.

India are the defending champions of the Women's Asian Champions Trophy, having beaten Japan in the final last year. They will be keen to defend their title this year and are among the favorites as well.

The Indian women’s hockey team will be led by 22-year-old midfielder Salima Tete, a dynamic new captain celebrated for her speed and agility on the field. Former captain Savita Punia remains a key part of the squad.

This tournament marks India’s first major outing under new head coach Harendra Singh, who stepped in following Janneke Schopman’s tenure. Schopman’s departure came after the Indian women’s team narrowly missed qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

India’s path to this competition has not been easy, having come off a tough Olympic Qualifiers campaign where they were close to earning a spot for Paris 2024.

It been a challenging season for India, with only two wins from 16 matches in the Women’s FIH Pro League, along with 13 losses and a draw.

Malaysia, who will face India in the opening match, have consistently finished fifth in recent major tournaments: the Women's Asian Champions Trophy last year, the 2022 Asian Games, and the 2022 Asia Cup. However, they claimed the top spot in the 2023 South East Asian Games.

India’s current world ranking is ninth, while Malaysia stand at 23rd, setting the stage for an exciting clash between the two teams.
