The Thrashers selected him as the fourth overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

In his major junior career, Kane achieved significant milestones, winning the Memorial Cup with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 2007. He emerged as the runner-up for the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the WHL Rookie of the Year in 2008 and secured a spot on the WHL West First All-Star Team in 2009.
