Chennaiyin FC set to sign striker Connor Shields | ISL 2023-24
Chennaiyin FC have roped in striker Connor Shields on a one-year deal, according to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph. The 25-year-old worked together with Owen Coyle at Queens Park, who is set to take over the Marina Machans after nearly leading them to glory in 2020.
Although the Scot international has a contract till 2024 with Motherwell, it is unsure if the deal would involve any transfer fee. It will be interesting to see how Shields would feature in a brand new environment after spending his time in Scotland and England.
Connor Shields' career at a glance before joining Chennaiyin FC
The Coatbridge-born striker kicked off his career with Albion Rovers, a Scottish League One club based out of North Lanarkshire in 2015. Following a decent spell with the Scottish outfit, he was handpicked by Sunderland, who were plying their trade in the second tier of English football.
An unsuccessful move saw him make zero appearances over two seasons for the first team. Connor Shield was eventually loaned out to the Scottish Championship side Alloa Athletic. He did not have his best of times by finding the back of the net on only three occasions in 34 appearances.
The striker had stints at Aldershot Town and Billericay Town, and Queen of the South, where he scored 11 goals in Scotland's top division. Manifesting his proficiency in front of the goal, Motherwell recruited him, but he failed to take off.
Despite taking the field over 50 times for Motherwell, Connor Shields scored just three goals, forcing him to look for a loan move. During his temporary stay at Queens Park, he scored five goals and assisted twice in 16 games.
Owen Coyle will be hoping to integrate him into the starting lineup alongside the experienced campaigner Jordan Murray in what might promise to be an enthralling season for the Blues.
