Anwar Ali likely to stay at Mohun Bagan Super Giant despite exit rumors

Anwar Ali is most likely set to stay at Mohun Bagan Super Giant despite several reports and rumors stating that the star defender’s loan deal with the Mariners has been terminated.

According to the Times of India journalist Marcus Mergulhao, "don't think Mohun Bagan have much to worry about” regarding Ali’s potential return to his parent club, Delhi FC.

The transfer saga began when Delhi FC owner Ranjit Bajaj announced on social media that Ali’s loan had been terminated, citing FIFA's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP), which do not permit loan agreements exceeding one year.

Ali, who signed with Bagan last season and has a contract until 2027, was expected to continue with the club. However, the recent enforcement of the RSTP has complicated matters. Bajaj stated that Ali would return to Delhi FC but is looking to join an ISL club, with two major clubs, including Mumbai City FC, being linked with the player.

Nevertheless, these reports have seemingly been rubbished, with Mohun Bagan’s social media handle also posting Ali’s contributions in the Durand Cup, strongly indicating that he will remain with the club.

The 23-year-old’s journey to the top is certainly an inspiring one, especially considering he had to step back from the sport due to a heart condition. He made a remarkable comeback a couple of years ago with FC Goa, where he made an impact during his one-and-a-half-year stay before Bagan signed him last season.

His first season at the club was memorable despite a few injury concerns, as he won the Durand Cup and the ISL Shield. He has also become one of India’s key defenders in recent times, playing a vital role in the country’s success over the past two years.

Antonio Habas, who played a key role in propelling Mohun Bagan to the ISL Shield, departed after just half a season. Replacing him is another Spaniard and former ISL winner, Jose Molina, who brings a strong pedigree after serving for the Spanish national team.

Bagan also started their transfer window with a bang, signing Apuia Ralte from rival Mumbai City FC by triggering his release clause and making him the first player in ISL history to be paid outside the salary cap.

While they have bid farewell to several players, including Hector Yuste, Brendan Hamill, and Joni Kuako, the club have already strengthened their squad with two significant defensive signings.

Brisbane Roar’s skipper, Tom Aldred, and Spanish center-back, Alberto Rodriguez, have been acquired by the club and are expected to make an instant impact.

The Mariners are also rumored to be pursuing A-League’s top goal-scorer and Australian international, Jamie Maclaren. They could sign a few more domestic players to add further depth to their already strong squad.
